A few minutes ago I ran apt update; apt upgrade and installed a few packages. Barely a minute later a popup window appeared listing several other packages, including Nautilus and Firefox, that it also wanted me to upgrade. These were a completely different set of packages than what apt had presented to me. Then it told me I needed to reboot. This raises several questions:

  • In the past I've generally only rebooted Linux when there was a kernel update. Is there any way to see why it wants me to reboot?
  • Why do new packages sometimes appear in a popup window instead of apt?
  • Why don't I see the second set of apps anywhere in the apt logs or in /var/cache/apt/archives
