    nvidia optimus GF119M [GeForce 610M] refusing to oprate on 16.04 LTS

    Dear Masters of Ubuntu,

    i left windows for good a month ago for ubuntu, so it's safe to say that i'm as green as it gets. Nevertheless it was fairly easy to get OS the up and running on my Samsung E100 save for GPU (GF119M [GeForce 610M]). I followed a handful of instructions trying to get nvidia drivers with & without bumblebee to spin the GPU but either worked, except this one. Unfortunately the driver here used is the transitional nvidia-361, it wasn't long after that an update pushed it to 367, after which the config ceased to work. After recallibrating the affected parameters (/etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf i didn't dare touch the other confs though) to point towards the freshly installed driver, i was greeted with a black screen occasionally re-starting only to give black each time. i've tried experimenting on a Mint Rosa, hoping an older kernel would be a gamechanger, but i ended up with the same results. By now i've read & tried so many options i feel completly lost. As of now, i'm sporting a fresh install of the ubuntu 16,04 LTS, nouveau wouldn't let my computer boot unless i do so in
    Code:
    nomodeset
    . So if you feel pluck, please care to help this here suffering feller, i can barelly get neverball to run

    here's some relevant intel

    Code:
    lspci | egrep "3D|VGA"

    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119M [GeForce 610M] (rev a1)
    Code:
    uname-a 4.4.0-31-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 13 00:07:12 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    when i tried to install nvidia-367 via "additional drivers" dmesg gave me the error: nvrm xid 44
    Graphics Engine fault during context switch
    should this be insufficient, do point out! Thanks in advance & please have a nice day!

    Re: nvidia optimus GF119M [GeForce 610M] refusing to oprate on 16.04 LTS

    mr.man2; Hello : Welcome to the forum.

    On that card when checking I was surprised to see that nVidia recommends the 375 version driver for that card.
    As an added aside, BumbleBee has been depreciated in favor of nvidia-prime to control the graphic's sets .
    I would expect the 367 version driver to work, and it is in xenial's software repository ( 375 in our trusted PPA ).
    On a fresh install with BumblebEE not a factor ( not installed ):
    Let's try this :
    Code:
    sudo rm /etc/X11/Xorg.conf
    sudo apt purge nvidia*
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt upgrade
    sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall
    Reboot to see the effect .

    Where I expect the installer to select and install the 367 version driver and as well nvidia-setting and nvidia-prime.

    maybe Yes !

    Dear Bashing-om, thanks for your care, however the proposed steps didn't yet solve my issue. After the reboot it went swell until the credentials' screen & after having authenticated, the very same screen would pop back up, demanding the credentials ad infinitum. Once i authenticated i passed to tty1 to grasp any sort of error message, and there were indeed two lines that flashed, i was unable even after several attempts to discern what was written there & i'm unsure of the whereabouts of the boot log & even if that would be there. after that i went for a
    Code:
    sudo apt purge nvidia*
    & now i'm back in the system

    mr.man2; Well ..

    That ain't good ..
    Not supposed to happen thata way .
    OK, does the system see the nvidia card ( disabled in bios ??) ? and what does X presently think :
    Paste back the output of terminal command:
    Code:
    cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    which is the log file of what X is setting up .

    which way did he go, George

    with my current version of BIOS in its GUI i am unable to see present components let alone modify them like this, only it's parametered differently. I've read somewhere that if the GPU was to be configured correctly it would show in
    Code:
    lspci | egrep "3D|VGA"
    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119M [GeForce 610M] (rev a1)
    as a 3D accelerator, not annother VGA controller.

    Re: nvidia optimus GF119M [GeForce 610M] refusing to oprate on 16.04 LTS

    mr.man2; Well ...

    The good news is that both graphic's sets are identified .
    The not so good is booting up with nomodeset:
    [ 66.519] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-47-generic root=UUID=a3415d70-ffc8-4278-905a-6134cd332c0c ro nomodeset quiet splash vt.handoff=7
    As this boot parameter disables Kernel Mode Setting and forces the fall back driver to load .

    So, how about removing that boot parameter, install again the nVidia proprietary driver and we see if things

    appear in a brighter light

    okay so i went for a
    Code:
    sudo nano /etc/default/grub
    so that it looks like:
    GRUB_DEFAULT=0
    GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
    GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
    GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
    GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
    went for a
    Code:
    sudo update-grub
    repeated the steps
    Code:
    sudo rm /etc/X11/Xorg.conf
    sudo apt purge nvidia*
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt upgrade
    sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall
    and had the black screen phenomenon re-appear only it went to notify me that the system is currently in low graphics mode, even though the boot text stated that the nvidia modules & persistence daemon started OK. i'm back with a purged nvidia & nomodeset back on

    p.s. thanks for your care it means a lot!!

    Re: nvidia optimus GF119M [GeForce 610M] refusing to oprate on 16.04 LTS

    mr.man2; Hummm ..

    Might be informative to know what driver "autoinstall" chooses and if the supporting packages also are installed along with the driver .
    Code:
    dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
    Take a look at the config file, insure that the Nvidia driver is "in-use" and Intel is available.
    Code:
    cat /etc/X11/Xorg.conf
    That file MUST exist and be in a consistent state to control the graphic's sets .

    Maybe also take nVidia's recommendation and see what results installing the 375 version ?

    a case here
    of sometimes I wonder

    Re: nvidia optimus GF119M [GeForce 610M] refusing to oprate on 16.04 LTS

    killer@killer-300E4C-300E5C-300E7C:~$ dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
    ii bbswitch-dkms 0.8-3ubuntu1 amd64 Interface for toggling the power on NVIDIA Optimus video cards
    killer@killer-300E4C-300E5C-300E7C:~$ cat /etc/X11/Xorg.conf
    cat: /etc/X11/Xorg.conf: No such file or directory
    this is what came out, after having undone the effects of

    Code:

    sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall
    should i re-implement it & check after?

    mr.man2; Uh Huh :
    should i re-implement it & check after?
    See then what driver and packages are installed.. and then what the config file contains.

    something to bite on
