    16.04.1 no longer recognizes external drives, usb hubs

    I have no way of showing this problem, but I upgraded my kernel and when I restarted I got a bunch of usb errors, followed by some kernel panic errors with the cpu.

    So I removed the old kernel and rebooted, and had the same issues. I ended up trying the recovery mode and that's whow I am able to make this post. But none of my external drives work now. I am sure there is a log that I need to show you to help me, Ijust don't know what it is. I tried dmesg but it was huge.

    Using 16.04.1 LTS, 4.7.2 kernel with xubuntu desktop.

    I'm sorry, but we can't help without knowing what the errors are. It's like a blind shot in the dark. This may help you.

    This log is longer than the dmesg log.

    There was something about not being able to enumerate the northbridges, which I assume is a CPU error.

    I do not see anything of immediate concern.

    Have you tried lsusb to list your devices?

    Ok, I have found that the only way I can get my usb ports to work is using the recovery mode of the kernel. I don't think this is more than a work around though.

    Just to help add some weight to this problem, I'm encountering it on my 14.04 desktop too. I've plugged in a generic USB memory card reader and inserted a 4GB compact flash card. I'm fairly sure I'm seeing the same thing on my 16.04 machine at home so will confirm that on here when I have a chance.

    I have managed to get usb devices work, but only in recovery kernel. I even tried upgraded to the 4.8 mainline kernel with the same results, regular kernel fails, recovery kernel works just fine.
