I got around to trying kernel 4.9-rc6. It seems O.K. but still no sign of the fixes for the high number of kworker threads.

Kernel 4.9-rc7 is available at kernel.org, but not yet in the Ubuntu mainline.

EDIT 1 (about 30 minutes later): It is in Ubuntu mainline now.

EDIT 2: Been running for over 12 hours hours. Only issue is the high number of kworker threads after boot problem.

I'm just curious is all.
Doug S have you looked at what is causeing or working with kworker yet?
In my case it was networking related...and I have not yet tried to fix it, nor would I at this point.
I used "perf" to record random samples...Below is some samples of mine.

Actually, I bisected the kernel and found the exact commit that introduced the problem, both when using SLAB or SLUB. There are 3 related bug reports, one on Launchpad, and two upstream. The launchpad one has been set to "fix released" even though that is incorrect because there were two contributing factors in the Ubuntu case, one being kernel configuration, the other the commit that I isolated. There is a two patch set for the issue, which has yet to be included in the mainline kernel. I do not understand what is taking so long, because normally a regression fix is included faster than this.

Thanks Doug S....Kernel 4.9 is turning out to be quite an adventure..
I wish I would have seen this a few weeks back though.

(note, I disable debug, because otherwise it takes over twice as long to compile the kernel, and it is enormous)
