    16.04 with sis graphics card

    Hello,

Just got 16.04 freshly installed on an older laptop with a sis 760 graphics card to find out sis is no way whatsoever supported?
Not a big deal for normal usage fbdev would function fine but max resolution is fixed at 640x480, does any of you guys nows how to change that?

Here's a collection of advice for various SIS cards: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2215422
I have not tried 16.04 myself but maybe something from the thread is still valid.
If you install Buntu 17.10 remember to download a new ISO file.

Old files might contain a bug which can damage UEFI hardware. Updating an existing installation and upgrading to 17.10 (if one has faith in upgrades in general) are safe.

Re: 16.04 with sis graphics card

The only thing that could work is https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/sis but altough that page claims to work on 16.04 I had some trouble since xorg.conf isn't used...

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install build-essential xorg-dev
cd ~/ #or whatever directory you want to use for this build
    wget http://xorg.freedesktop.org/releases/individual/driver/xf86-video-sis-0.10.8.tar.bz2
    tar xjf xf86-video-sis-0.10.8.tar.bz2
    cd xf86-video-sis-0.10.8/
    ./configure --prefix=/usr
    make
    sudo make install

The file is not there by default in the recent Buntus but if you create it then it will be used.
