I have thought about this more than I should have...
My first instinct is to say Japan since I know quite a bit about the culture.
However, I would probably have to say Iceland. From what I can tell, they are a welcoming, warm people. The society welcomes new technologies, and it would give me an opportunity to try Brennevin.
North East Brazil for the drumming and Indonesia for Gamelan .... i'd use Ubuntu in either of those places too
Linux is Latin for off-the-beaten-track

I could go to Beijing. Then I would be able to still enjoy the fall foliage I get now![]()
I like France
Canada is too cold in winter, even though I loved outdoor winter sports as a young fellow. At this point in my life, I'd consider New Zealand or Tasmania.

Not as cold as Canada, but I'd do a bit of research. Virtually all of New Zealand gets cooold at some time of the year and Tasmania is cooooold, full stop. It might be part of Australia, but it's not part of the mainland and as far south as Australia gets. There's nothing between Tassie and the south pole, so you're getting the picture ...
Tassie may be warm if you live somewhere that's always cold, but comparatively, not the warmest place and not to be compared with other parts of Australia. They do get snow there on occasion. Here's where I live and Tassie:
Adelaide, South Australia
Hobart, Tasmania
If you compare the averages you'll see what I mean about the temp differences. Absolutely lovely place, though. Australian home of the magnificent Huon pine, some of which have life spans of 2,000 years or more (little did the original loggers know, or probably care, when they attempted to clear the lot on arrival).

@ Bucky Ball: LOL, you call that cold? I call that pleasantly mild. Even your winter temps are tolerable. Isn't the northern isle of NZ tropical? I understand that the southern isle is cooler and that you can ski in the mountains. I'd probably prefer someplace in the middle of NZ, but I think Tasmania sounds like a place I want to visit. It's on my bucket list. Perhaps I'll check out Oz while I'm in that neck of the woods.![]()

Canada as you can feed the Black Bears in the summer and the Polar Bears in the winter without leaving your yard.
