    16.04 network-manager-strongswan Missing GUI entry

    Anyone else seeing this?

Fresh install of 16.04 Desktop. Install network-manager-strongswan. No option to select strongswan when adding a new connection.

"Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)" is the only option.

    Tried restarting NetworkManager.
    Tried rebooting.
Tried installing every network-manager-* plugin to discover a missing lib or something.

Ideas? Is this new to 16.04? I haven't tried to install network-manager-strongswan before.

That is not default network manager for ubuntu but it looks like you can install it from here.

Not quite sure what you mean. "network-manager-strongswan" is a plugin for "Network Manager". I only have official repos configured.

I literally just installed "16.04 Desktop" and then "apt-get install network-manager-strongswan".

    Code:
    # dpkg --list | grep network-manager
    ii network-manager 1.2.0-0ubuntu0.16.04.2
    ii network-manager-gnome 1.2.0-0ubuntu0.16.04.1
    ii network-manager-pptp 1.1.93-1ubuntu1
    ii network-manager-pptp-gnome 1.1.93-1ubuntu1
    ii network-manager-strongswan 1.3.1-1ubuntu1

This seems to be a bug in 16.04: https://wiki.strongswan.org/issues/1429

Anyone know how to setup the configuration manually, without nm?

Was able to get IKE IPSec working with the ShrewSoft VPN manager.

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install ike-qtgui
Integrated with NetworkManager... it isn't. But it does at least let me connect to my work VPN.

Re: 16.04 network-manager-strongswan Missing GUI entry

The solution is to build network-manager-strongswan from source. I tested it on 3 different machines and I now have Strongswan appearing as an option when creating a new VPN in network Manager.

    Code:
    # get the strongSwan tarball
    wget http://download.strongswan.org/strongswan-5.x.x.tar.bz2
    tar xjf strongswan-5.x.x.tar.bz2
    cd strongswan-5.x.x

    # build charon with OpenSSL/NM Plugin
    ./configure –sysconfdir=/etc –prefix=/usr –libexecdir=/usr/lib \
    –disable-aes –disable-des –disable-md5 –disable-sha1 –disable-sha2 \
    –disable-fips-prf –disable-gmp –enable-openssl –enable-nm –enable-agent \
    –enable-eap-gtc –enable-eap-md5 –enable-eap-mschapv2 –enable-eap-identity
    make
    make install

    # get the NetworkManager strongsSwan plugin as a tarball
    wget http://download.strongswan.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager-strongswan-1.x.x.tar.bz2
    tar xjf NetworkManager-strongswan-1.x.x.tar.bz2
    cd NetworkManager-strongswan-1.x.x

    # build the NetworkManager strongsSwan plugin (if you changed prefix/libexecdir above, set –with-charon=/path/to/charon-nm)
    ./configure –sysconfdir=/etc –prefix=/usr –with-charon=/usr/lib/ipsec/charon-nm
    make
    make install
