    Question 16.04 - Installed Mate DE; how do I switch to it?

    There used to be a gear icon on the login screen that would allow you to select your desktop environment. I can't find it anywhere! Any idea how I choose the Mate desktop once it's installed?

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: 16.04 - Installed Mate DE; how do I switch to it?

    I'm not using Ubuntu but might be the same. At the login screen there is a panel along the top where you can shutdown/restart on the far right. Hope this makes sense, but the first icon to the right (the furthest left of the right bunch of icons) is the one for me. Click that and you should find the sessions, if you have an icon there in the first place.

    Re: 16.04 - Installed Mate DE; how do I switch to it?

    When we install an alternate desktop in Ubuntu + Unity we get a Ubuntu icon at the top right of the panel where we put our user password. Clicking that should present a drop down menu with the alternate desktop sessions. It works from me on 16.04 with Gnome Flashback.

    The chosen session becomes the default and its icon replaces the Ubuntu icon as a reminder of which session is the default. These icons are not present if Unity is the only session.

    Regards.
    It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

    @grahammechanical-

    Thanks, that's what I've been expecting, but not what I'm seeing. Perhaps I didn't install everything needed? The package I installed is called mate-desktop, installed via apt-get. It shows I have version 1.12.1-1 installed, but when logging in, I see no icon near the password field (or anywhere else).

    I think you should have installed ubuntu-mate-desktop instead. No harm done, just go ahead and install it now. Only the requisite additional software will be installed.

    But please run sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade first.

    Another place to look to confirm that you need to do the above is in /usr/share/xesssions: could you post the output of ls /usr/share/xesssions? The number of .desktop files there will give you an idea of how many desktop environments choices at login are available to you.

    @vasa1-

    Thank you! I knew it had to be that I didn't have it installed correctly. It's installing now, and I'm going to assume all is well. Thanks!!!

    That can be dangerous!!!

    If all goes as expected, mark the thread as solved and let us know. I for one have fingers and toes crossed.

    Marked as solved, all is well. Thank you! I wanted to leave thanks for everyone, but it looks like that feature is not part of the forums anymore?
