16.04 Software Updater not working properly?

Ever since installing 16.04 I've never been notified of updates by Software Updater. Instead having to manually

sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade

My settings are:

Automatically check for updates: Daily
When there are security updates: Display immediately
When there are other updates: Display immediately

I had those same settings in 14.04 and Software Updater always appeared in the panel notifying me when updates were due.

Did you try and leave APT alone for more than 24 Hours? (Or do you "apt upgrade" often?)

I think i have left APT alone for more than 24 hours, but I'll try again.

Well I left apt alone for one week and still no updates. So today I ran

sudo apt update

and updated 28 packages.

I get notifications about updates. But clicking them does nothing, and if your afk when they appear. Then nothing happens. So I guess you could say I have the same issue.

Both my laptop and my desktop, both running Ubuntu MATE 16.04, have the software updater running fine. I prefer

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

and it always works fine for me.

I have made a .bash_aliases file:

alias lls='ls -lh'
alias update='sudo apt update && sudo apt list --upgradable'
alias upgrade='sudo apt upgrade -y'

In other words I "update" then look before I "upgrade"
