The same happens to me. However the game I'm playing works fine. When I check if the Steam client is updated, the answer is yes. When I check for steam packages at http://repo.steampowered.com/steam, there are only Precise packages.

Yeah games works fine except for that annoying pop up. I also tried removing that old repo then update/reinstall steam but to no success.

Steam switched from Ubuntu to Debian for SteamOS, maybe this is related?

That is neither quite correct nor new.

Valve first released a Steam client for Ubuntu (it runs on many distros – but Ubuntu is the only "officially" supported distro).

Later (but still over a year ago) they released SteamOS - which was always based on Debian (just like Ubuntu - which is also based on Debian).

The Ubuntu Steam client is still also supported. When you look at games that run on Linux the System Requirements Tab says "SteamOS + Linux" and then lists something like "OS: Ubuntu 14.04.2 64-bit or Steam OS".

    There was never a "switch".
