DVD playback (Gnome MPlayer Freeze, VLC errors, Mplayer not starting)

All I want to do is play a DVD. Pop it in, try playing it in VLC, get loads of error messages. I understand there's a full on VLC version out there that's different from what I saw on Software Center, but I've only found instructions for earlier Ubuntu versions (I'm in Ubuntu 14.04).

I read that MPlayer runs "everything", but is command line. Downloaded it, entered command line to run mplayer, get a menu of Mplayer commands, not a playing DVD!

I then read that there's a gnome skin for MPlayer. Downloaded it, tried playing one of the DVD files (*.VOB files). Both MPlayer and my ENTIRE UBUNTU DESKTOP FROZE. Mouse still worked but only in 1 out of 2 screens.

No BS, please: what app REALLY works in Ubuntu to play DVDs?!
