ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS downgrade from 14.1

Hi, i've downloaded the iso installer for the desktop version of 14.04.3 - clearly some files are missing in order for this to be a bootable CD image. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

question: is there an easy way to get this to work so i can burn a BOOTABLE CD and install 14.04.3 over my current 14.1 OS? i have it on a dual boot with win7 and would like to leave the win7 partition as-is

have tried various methods to get this to work but so far no joy

ps i'm looking for the easy to use graphical installation format, same as the nice and easy 14.1 installer, rather than typing in miles of code

That download is just fine, so "clearly" doesn't make any sense without some context from you.
You can go from 14.04.1 enablement stack to 14.04.3 enablement stack without doing a fresh install, read here carefully -

(- you may wish to simulate the command first to ck., if so add a -s after apt-get, ie.

I think from your description that the .iso file you downloaded may be corrupt, but it is difficult to know exactly what you mean by "clearly some files are missing in order for this to be a bootable CD image."

You can check the file in your current 14.10 version, if this is what you really have, very easily; see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

Once you have the bootable DVD or USB you can carry on with the installation of 14.04.3 in exactly the same way that you did for 14.10, but make sure you have all your personal files backed up elsewhere first as you will probably lose all of them in the reinstallation unless you have a separate /home or /data partition which you can choose not to format during the installation.

If you need more help ask again with as much detailed info as you can about what you have done so far and any error messages you get.

Hi all, sorry i should have explained myself better! i think i may have found the reason why the CD is not booting.. i've mistakenly downloaded the AMD64 version when my laptop is i386. Just wondering at this point if there's a way of modifying the AMD64 installer so it will work on i386 or do i need to download from scratch?

The easiest way is a whole new download.
It is possible to edit the .iso...but not easy, and requires typing in miles of code.

HOWEVER:
In Ubuntu, x86_64 and AMD64 and i386 don't usually refer to actual CPU types. They are usually shorthand for 32-bit vs 64-bit
AMD64 simply means the 64-bit version of Ubuntu. It runs equally well on Intel and AMD 64-bit processors.
i386 simply means the 32-bit version of Ubuntu. It also runs equally well on Intel and AMD 32-bit processors.

Example: My Ubuntu AMD64 (64-bit) kernel is happily running right now on my Intel i5.

ah well.. here i go again then! strange how the download page seemed to think AMD64 would be the best version for my system,,, still, live and learn thanks for the advice

Hello again... i now have the i386 iso file but still having same problem, iso burns/extracts to disk fine, all files look to be correct but it will not boot either from CD or USB, wheras other installation files i've made e.g. 14.1 installer CD, netboot USB all boot on startup just fine. if i try to mount the iso within linux 14.1 it just brings up a folder to view files, no other option.

i've tried looking up the hash via md5sum, the hash generated by md5sum command in terminal does not match the hashes listed - presuming i'm looking them up correctly on the hashes page - a lot of links to choose from but i checked this page: http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.04/MD5SUMS

so any advice on what to do now to get this thing to boot and install??

ubuntu-14.04.3-desktop-i386.iso appears to be faulty in some way, i have downloaded it several times and although it creates a DVD fine it will not boot on startup. it is not a bios issue as other iso's will boot fine. i need either a work-around to get the installer to run, or a link to a proven working bootable iso.
i have an i5 laptop (lenovo x220). i am running a dual boot system of ubuntu 14.1 and win7 on separate partitions currently. i would like to install 14.04.3 to replace my 14.1 partition (essentially a downgrade), whilst leaving the win7 partition intact.
i would prefer to use a graphical interface installer.

ps my iso of 14.1 boots fine... i wonder if its possible to copy certain files from that one onto the 14.04.3 dvd to make it work?

The md5sums have to match otherwise you most likely won't have a bootable disk.

sorry i'm a bit confused.. i've already established the md5sums dont match, so how can the howto help me any further? apparently i'm supposed to report it to the webmaster of that mirror... i'll have to look into that i guess
