Is it worth installing 14.04 in September 2015?

    Hi guys!

I have been using Ubuntu 14.04 on my laptop since it came out and now Im thinking to finally get rid of Windows on my main computer, so I was interested if its worth to install it now?

The 16.04 is coming out next year, hopefully within 6 months so my decision is kinda kinky.

    Any thought would be welcome.

16.04 will be in April. I personally would suggest going ahead and installing 14.04. Just because a new LTS drops doesn't mean you HAVE to upgrade. 14.04 is supported till 2019 so it isn't a super rush.

Instead of completely ditching Windows, try to setup a dual-boot.
(Unless Windows is XP, in which case, yeah nuke it; my opine)

If you setup a dual-boot correctly, you'll have the benefit of at least having a Windows install.
(You never know if or when you might need to do something that only Windows can do)

And if it fails, well, you were already prepared to lose it anyway.
Think of it as a no harm no foul.

Also, you might not want to install 16.04 until a month or so after it's released.
So probably tack on a couple of extra months to that 6 month timeline figure.

(I'd even go as far as to say wait until August 2016, when the first point release hits and comes with a boatload of bug fixes that usually hit when the first release hits in April)

If your hardware is well supported by 14.04 and you're not concerned about having the latest shiny, I would have no compunction about installing the latest 14.04 rather than waiting for 16.04's bugs to get squashed.

It's OK to try 14.04.3 first but if you encounter any bugs you should switch to 15.04 or 15.10 (beta) before wasting time with semi-old software.

Bugs in 14.04 will normally not be fixed unless they are a security threat. Standard procedure is that the bug will be fixed in the development release, which is 15.10.

also if installing 14.04 I believe that upgrade prompt will be presented at 16.04.1 which will be later in the year.

Yes, I would recommend that. It is not a good idea to get 16.04 when it comes out in April next year, should wait at least a month for post release bug fixes. I wouldn't recommend beta release (15.10) One day it would be working and then the next update will mess something up. You can keep most of your applications in 14.04 up to date with ppas.

Seeing that 14.04 LTS is the current long-term support stable release, supported until 2019, and 15.04 is supported four more months, I'd say yes, it is worth it if you don't fancy upgrading your OS every six months to a new, possibly wobbly on your machine, interim release.

    14.04 LTS hasn't even reached half-life yet.
