I have revived a circa 2002, cheapo laptop with Lubuntu (most recent LXLE actually) and have tried to set it up be be used with the Japanese language. I have been partially successful. I can log in to either an English system or a Japanese system. User A can choose either language, as can user B. Either user, in either language, can read things in Japanese, and have Japanese menus if they chose Japanese when logging in. So far so good. Here's where it gets weird. If user A or B chooses English as the operating language when logging in, he or she can also type in Japanese. But if he or she chooses Japanese when logging in, ironically, can not type in Japanese. I'm running ibus, the system ensures me it is the latest version, I have it set to autostart. And like I said, it works fine if you log in as an English user. But I can not figure out why the same user logging in and selecting "Japanese" can not use ibus. It appears in the tray, but no matter what it, says (in Japanese) "no input window" btw I have tried a full fresh install using Japanese from the start, but there is a chicken and egg problem: since before installing there is no Japanese etc, most of the non european languages are unreadable during the install process. Too risky, aborted. Installed English and added Japanese capability later. Other than that, I can't believe how nice this once wheezing old machine has become. Thank you Lubuntu.
