    Pear OS question

    Hello All,

Disclaimer: I am sorry if this is a silly question but I have searched and not found an adequate explanation or solution.

Is it possible or feasible to upgrade a distro such as Pear OS that is no longer developed? In other words, can I take Pear OS 8 and update the Ubuntu base and still use the distro indefinitely as each new LTS comes out or is there some limitation I am not aware of?

I appreciate any input and feedback as I have been curious about the options for EOL distros.

    Thank you.

    Re: Pear OS question

No, do not try this. pear has an OSX-lookalike GUI, which involved to fix more than a few configuration challenges. And Ubuntu has never been tested against that base. If they stopped doing the work, there is likely to be a reason for it, and unless you want to take over from where they left... (i wouldnt...)
take some time to find an alternative that suit you.

    Re: Pear OS question

Well, it would be more for fun than anything as I was curious if it was even possible and would be using it on an old machine for testing. I am using and loving Ubuntu MATE but enjoyed Pear OS for what it was and thought it would be fun if I could get it working with an updated Ubuntu base.

    Re: Pear OS question

i just ran into "Elementary OS" which seams to be an Ubuntu based OSX lookalike - not sure. Will you look at a live ISO?

    edit:
or - if you absolutely want a pure debian base - you may want to investigate solydX, which at present is based on jessie.

    Re: Pear OS question

Thank you, Bardo2, but I have tried these distros as well and really am only just curious about the possibilities of using a specific distro indefinitely by updating the core. I am not sure how to update PearOS to 14.04 and test it out and keep it updated if all works well. I am hoping someone can give me some direction regarding the possibilities.
