From the mouth of the Kubuntu developers:

    http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2014/07/08...el.html#t11:15
Corodius just out of pure curiousity, will there (eventually) be packages for Kubuntu 14.04, in some form (I assume a different PPA) for KF5/Plasma 5 similar to Kubuntu-Next PPA? Or will it only be packages as project neon 5 is now? just curious as I said 11:15

Riddell Corodius: I doubt we will package KF5 for 14.04, I don't think there will be much demand and it'll take a lot of time 12:24

MintyNinja41 Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew exactly when KDE Plasma 5 would be available for Kubuntu 14.04 (besides from experimental PPA or similar)? 20:20
    ScottK MintyNinja41: Never. 20:20
ScottK The first non-PPA release for us will be fore 15.04. 20:21
    MintyNinja41 Oh- because 14.04 is LTS? 20:22
MintyNinja41 Right, I've finished downloading the Neon image, I'd like to test it. Thanks ScottK. 20:27
ScottK Because 14.04 is already released and we don't do major updates like that post-release. 14.10 won't have it officially either. 20:32
    ScottK It's not co-installable with KDE4 plasma. 20:33

Re: Is KDE5 on 14.04 out yet?

I upgrade to the next release of Ubuntu every six months. I am a home user. If I was the owner of a business with many computers I would want to install an operating system that not only had support for many years but was also stable and not changing. I would want this because I would not want the cost of retraining my employees to use a new user interface.

So, we have Long Term Support versions every two years and these versions are stable. The developers do not want to change the user interface and upset business users. This is why Kubuntu 14.04 will not get the new plasma 5 user interface. Most likely it will be Kubuntu 16.04 that becomes the next LTS version with plasma 5 as the user interface.

Trying to put plasma 5 onto kubuntu 14.04 would risk breaking the operating system because, as was said in the posts, the two plasmas are not compatible. You do not want your OS broken do you? Stay with 14.04 and be happy.

    Regards.

It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

Nothing is 'wrong' with 14.04. KDE 5 represents major revisions and upgrades of many core components of KDE that are, in fact, still in progress. The KDE developers and packagers have chosen not to support it for 14.04, very likely for very good reasons. This doesn't mean KDE in 14.04 is being abandoned. The LTS is supported throughout its lifespan.

Isn't this simply a reflection of the philosophy behind LTS releases, that they are more or less frozen at the time of release and only package upgrades distributed?

If you want to try out KDE5, install a copy of the Kubuntu 15.04 beta. I'd use a virtual machine myself, since it's likely to be a bumpy ride.

Yes but Kubuntu have made new versions of KDE available to older releases of Kubuntu as backports.

At present there are too many KDE releases to test, package, release and support for each of the currently supported Kubuntu versions.

I've been waiting patiently for KDE 4.14.3 to appear for Kubuntu 14.10 as a couple of bugs/crashes that are affecting me have been fixed in that release. Apparently it's not going to happen as the Kubuntu team are too busy working on KDE5, primarily for Kubuntu 15.04. The Kubuntu team is very small and have nothing like the resources available as the Ubuntu desktop team. I think during this period of great change for KDE, to be sure of the latest software, Kubuntu users will have to upgrade each development cycle.

I have two installations of Kubuntu 14.04 here. They'll not be upgraded to a brand new desktop environment without a lot of testing and use of that environment on either Kubuntu 15.04 or 15.10 first. If need be, I'll keep them as they are for the full five years or until I'm happy that KDE5 is stable and feature complete.

True, true. The number of names on builds at the Kubuntu PPA's is pretty small. They deserve Gold Stars and lots of free coffee.

I've been trying KDE '5' every week or so, in a real install. I haven't yet thought it ready for fulltime use. It's still seems fragile to me. (Netrunner's "5" release is done on a "special" Kubuntu 14.10. If I was going to stay with "5" at the moment, I'd use it. Rather short lifetime, though.)

Re: Is KDE5 on 14.04 out yet?

I'm a bit late to the discussion, but I regret the decision to drop the Neon5 project that allowed installing KF5 in its own subtree. I don't think it would have been an inhumane effort to keep the existing packaging scripts from that project up to date with the KF5 version shipped with 15.05 for instance. The packaging could even have been simplified (just installing all of KF5-foo in a single .deb rather than in a bunch of sub-packages).
At least that would have given 14.04 users a chance to install and use newer versions of KDE applications. With KDE's "moral obligation" to focus all new development on KF5, we on 14.04 have increasingly been left with outdated software, and facing lack of support from application developers because (I cite) they won't beat a dead horse and don't understand why we don't just update to KF5.
