    virtual security lab, seeking recommendations

    Hi,

I've recently gotten interested in learning about network security. I'm wondering if anyone has done this with Xubuntu 14.04 LTS and what their chosen path of implemetation was. I see that I have VirtualBox already installed on the system, should I use that? I'm pretty new to this, although I've studied networking on Linux a bit in the past. Are there any recommended tutorials for making a virtual lab that anyone could recommend? In a similar vein, could anybody recommend some good online and offline material to brush up on linux networking?

You could install a Kali Linux virtual machine inside VirtualBox and use it as your main monitor machine.

It would be worth joining and asking the same question at your local DefCon group. Those guys eat/sleep/live this stuff. After all, most of the attacks are against Windows. Virtualbox is a good beginning setup. If you need more control over the network, then other options are likely to be better.
