So it looks like nvidia is not the problem at this point...Code:$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep "nvidia" [ 29.360] (**) |-->Screen "nvidia" (0) [ 29.420] (**) | |-->Device "nvidia" [ 29.420] (==) No monitor specified for screen "nvidia". Ok, I don't know exactly what WAS wrong... but... I pulled the pin on a twenty megaton data bomb. After reinstall of ubuntu, I set up the PPA and installed nvidia-340 (it is listed as one of the drivers by nvidia that supports this card, they list 340 and 346 from what I have read) Anyway It works! I think something must have been fouled up bit wise with the original install, though I have NO clue what. This time I did a md5 check on the download, and then ran the integrity check before installing. Thank you for all you help and hard work @Bashing-om! Let me know if you're ever in Portland, OR. I'll buy ya a beer. (provided it is legal to do so.)
I have been following this thread with interest as I have exactly the same problem and am also completely baffled.
Am I right in thinking that you just did a comlete reinstall and now it works with the xorg-edgers nvidia-340 package? I have installed Ubuntu so many times that I can almost do it in my sleep so a full install isn't that big a deal. I'm fed up of using my slow Intel graphics card for Minecraft as it isn't really up to the job in full screen mode. If a reinstall will do the trick, it's a small amount of pain that will be well worth it.
You are correct except for the ppa. The ppa I used was
As soon as the install was complete (redownload fresh, and check your md5 checksum, and/or do an integrity check befor you install.) Then run all updates. Then install the ppa. Then install nvidia driver. Reboot. That's how I did it anyway. I hope that if you are at the end of your rope, this helps. And remember to back up all your data first!Code:ppa:mamarley/nvidia
zan-public; Outstanding !
Pleased to no end that you are up and running; Regretful that it took a (re-)install to make it so. All I can surmise is as originally guesstimated that there was a conflict between the DM's . We do see often times that in the process of removing one DM, the other is borked and not able to find the cause. ( I do feel a failure on my part)

@lotus49; Hello; happy to help.
IF you do NOT do a fresh clean install; prior to installing the proprietary Nvidia driver DO purge all other drivers from the system.
As you have opted into this thread, please let us know how it goes.
all's well that ends well
Hello,
I'm following this tread because I have same issue with my Nvidia 840m on my asus ux303. I did even fresh installation of ubuntu 14.10 and ppa:mamarley/nvidia to repository and installed nvidia-340. In my case the problem still persist. After reboot black screen when lightdm is loaded.

Did you make sure to download it fresh, or at least validate with md5 checksum, or the built in validation tool that comes up when you first boot up on the ISO image? This is actually very important, because everything could seem fine, but that one thing (who knows what) could just not work properly, and you might have no idea why...
Yes, fresh download 2 days ago md5 check went fine and also installation without errors or warnings.

I've solved the issue by following this: http://askubuntu.com/questions/51898...-64-bit-laptop
