Mouse buttons work sporadically

I just installed Lubuntu (64 bit) on my HP Stream (11.6inch). The mouse+track pad buttons will work for a while (or not work for a while) and seemingly randomly stop or start working again. It's very frustrating as there are things I encounter and use that require these buttons.

Why would it do that? Originally I thought there was some configuring to be done and then they started working randomly. I'm a novice and don't understand this problem. Any help, insight, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Now it's not working on the -,+,x buttons at the top of my windows. I cannot click out of firefox. But it is working for navigating this site.
