Otherwise, if your willing to pay $1/mo + ~1c for each SMS, there are a few VOIP providers around that support SMS. Most of the time, received SMSes are forwarded to email, and you can send/receive from the provider's portal. Twilio allows you to create a custom handler that can support many things, including sending the messages to email.
Don't waste your energy trying to change opinions ... Do your thing, and don't care if they like it.
