Linux Lite issue Graphic prob.

Ok I installed Linux Lite on an Hp Pavillion N5445, It installed neatly , im runing 1 gig of PC133 Ram. with 70 gig hd, and i believe a intel 800 to 830 gpu on board, so yeah its an oldy and for the reason i chose Linux Lite..Well to the point..When it bootsa up it reamins at 800 by 600 screen size and will not go to its normal 1024 by 800 (i think thts it?) and it scrunches up into the far upper leftside of the screen and no matter what i do , it wont cover the whole screen like it ought to ??? So im at a loss, and yes i did all the other things disk check, cd check, hardware check...so i know it isnt the hardware! please someon help me...because this thing sucks...It seems the only thing that works properly on this stupid machine is Win. XP!!!! You would thing windows 7 would work with it but it dont....so yeah..please
