Post Wubi "No Root Filesystem Is Defined"

    Hello all,
Iam a new linux user, trying to install ubuntu over the WIN7 with wubi.
When I boot to linux for the first time, "No Root Filesystem is Defined" message appears preventing the installation completion...

There are some solutions here on the forum, but I afraid to apply the before I get the second opinion on my boot-info-script.

    Code:
                      Boot Info Script 0.61 [1 April 2012]

Re: Wubi "No Root Filesystem Is Defined"

    Welcome to the Ubuntu Forums

Wubi is no longer supported and developed because it does not work with Windows 8. It was a nice way to test Ubuntu, but not intended for regular usage. See this link

    Forums Staff recommendations on WUBI

I suggest that you try it live, and then make a dual boot installation. See this link

Try Ubuntu (Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, ...) before installing it

Re: Wubi "No Root Filesystem Is Defined"

    Is this an UltraBook?
You show /dev/mapper mounts in sdb a 29GB drive.

It does look like a BIOS/MBR install of Windows otherwise, but the Ubuntu desktop installer does not do RAID and Intel SRT which is used for Ultrabooks to implement the cache somehow uses RAID configuration.

Re: Wubi "No Root Filesystem Is Defined"

Yes, actually it is DELL XPS 14 ultrabook.I tried to disable the acceleration for "Intel rapid storage" in Windows (thought it migth help some way) and also, I ran fixparts.

Here is another thing I have noticed:

I created the new partition of 34.9G for ubuntu in Windows. However, there are two partitions with this size in sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda. sda4 seems to be unused and it overlaps with sda5. Should I consider to delete sda4 ??

    Code:
    ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda

    Disk /dev/sda: 465.8 GiB, 500107862016 bytes, 976773168 sectors
    Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
    Disklabel type: dos
    Disk identifier: 0xc1e76092

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
    /dev/sda1 63 80324 80262 39.2M de Dell Utility
    /dev/sda2 * 81920 25767935 25686016 12.3G 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
    /dev/sda3 25767936 903548927 877780992 418.6G 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
    /dev/sda4 903548928 976764927 73216000 34.9G f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
    /dev/sda5 903550976 976764927 73213952 34.9G 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT

Partition 2 does not start on physical sector boundary.

Short answer NO. Leave these as they are if you are preparing for a full dual-boot.

If you delete SDA4 you will remove SDA5 at the same time. SDA4 is an 'Extended Partition' which is a container for 'Logical Partitions', it is capable of holding around 100 - or more - partitions.

It might be an idea to shrink SDA5 by about 2 GB to facilitate the creation of a 'Swap Partition'.

If SDA5 is/was the area used for the "wubi' installation then empty it by booting Windows and using 'Remove a Program' in the Control Panel.

Re: Wubi "No Root Filesystem Is Defined"

If not using the hibernation or Intel SRT, some users have installed / (root) to the SSD and made Ubuntu very fast. Others have re-enabled the SRT after install of Ubuntu to hard drive.

For GPT systems, this needs to have a type GUID of D3BFE2DE-3DAF-11DF-BA-40-E3A556D89593.
For MBR systems, you need a partition type of 0x84[2].

Disable the RAID, it was using the Intel rapid management thingy and telling it to disable the acceleration or the use of the SSD. If you have a different system, just disable the RAID system then install Ubuntu. Once installed you can then re-enable it.
    sudo dmraid -E -r /dev/sda
    sudo dmraid -E -r /dev/sdb
You will need to use the dmraid command prior to running the Ubuntu Installer so that it will be able to see the partitions on the drive because otherwise with the raid metadata in place it will see the drive as part of a raid set and ignore its partitions.
