Fglrx driver doesn't work after upgrade to 14.10

I just upgraded yesterday to 14.10.
After rebooting I got the ubuntu logo but X wouldn't start.
Anticipating possible problems I had already downloaded the fglrx driver from amd's website and uncompressed it.
I generated the deb packages and let the fglrx-installer install the packages and then rebooted. No change.
I purged the fglrx driver, the amdccc -dev, xorg.conf and everything, rebooted and got X to start using the libre/open driver.
That's fine, but I play games using wine a lot, so I really need fglrx to work like it did in 14.04.
I tried to install fglrx through the "additional drivers" tab in "software & updates", but it automagically jumps back to the open source
driver after I click apply for some reason. Something is broken, but I'm not sure what.
I've tried to run apt-get install -f to see if there were some dependency problems, but nothing.
Can someone please help me?

For some reason 14.10 doesn't like the AMD drivers from the AMD site. You will probably need to install the drivers in the repository. My fix action was to;

sudo aptitude remove fglrx
sudo aptitude install fglrx

I have tried that option and It did not work for me whatsoever. On reboot, I get an error window which says that the system will load in Low-res, but It xserver simply stalls at a blank screen. I am still waiting on a permanent solution because my laptop does not wake from suspend without the proprietary fglrx drivers

I've had the same problem on a ThinkPad laptop. Solved it by removing fglrx with purge option:
sudo apt-get remove fglrx* --purge
You will notice that not everything is deleted.
Please delete the following files manually:
rm -Rf /etc/ati
rm -Rf /usr/lib/fglrx
Then you can install fglrx again:
sudo apt-get install fglrx
aticonfig --initial --force

Voila.. Everything works (at least for me)

Same here, I have a black screen at start up, after the Ubuntu splash screen. Only tty* are available.
Note that, I have also observed, but not anymore, a message box saying that I run in low resolution mode.

I tried to install fglrx again and again, nothing works.

Here is my Xorg log. As one can see, there is a problem with libfglrxdrm.so "Can't load FireGL DRM library (libfglrxdrm.so).". Don't know if it is related.

Do you observe the same?

Here are the command line I use to clear fglrx:

## stops graphic server
sudo service lightdm stop
## remove FGLRX
sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon  
## install radeon driver
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-radeon
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core
## reconfigure xorg
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
sudo Xorg -configure
sudo cp xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sudo rm xorg.conf.new
## starts graphic server
sudo service lightdm start

In my case, everything is removed, don't have to manually remove these two folders. At least removing fglrx works...

Do you have Wine installed? in 14.10 there seems to be a conflict between Wine and FGLRX

Yes, wine was installed, but I tried removing it and reinstalling FGLRX, I still have the problem.

My solution that worked:
- Make a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.10. (Easy if you do not have to much apps installed.)

However, Wine will not work out of box, since it conflicts with FGLRX. I'm waiting the SRU for this bug that I expect soon, but if you don't want to wait for it, some workaround are available, at least here.

I had this same problem. I solved it by disabling the spash screen:

On file /etc/default/grub, look for this line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet spash"
Change to:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""

Then:
# update-grub2

Having the same problem after upgrading to 14.04.2 , from what i gathered it's a problem with the new linux kernel 3.16 (if i am correct), thats why affects 14.10 and 12.04.5 too.

I suggest you click "Affects me!" in this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...r/+bug/1424491 .

And lets hope for a quick solution
