    3.16 or 3.17-rc6?
For first You should either look: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...tem&px=MTc5ODM or, better: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...h&q=Linux+3.17 That is a question that needs a long and detailed answer, bigger each and every time new kernel arrives.
For second, from the source, of course: http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/k...9.3/03393.html , again not a light question.
The only proof of difference is Yours and Yours only experince in using it, like everywhere in life.

    Re: 3.17-rc7

Jerry, the rate of change within the kernel is absolutely staggering. There has been 3378 commits between 3.16 and 3.17RC7.

By the way, I have been running 3.17RC7, both a "generic" (250 Hertz) version and a "low latency" (1000 Hertz) version, for a couple of days now without issues.
Any follow-up information on your issue would be appreciated. Please have the courtesy to report back.

    Re: 3.17-rc7

utopic beta level amd64 updated to 3.16.0-20 then installed rc7.
Ran O.K. on Lenovo M58p Intel Core 2 Duo 3 gHz 4 GB. Made no measurements,
Seemed about the same as 3.16.0-20 on BBC video's 1360x768 full screen videos.

With Acer Aspire 1 netbook 2 GB:
Utopic beta level amd64 updated to -20 ran O.K.
    Then installed rc7

Compiz crashed booting up on rc7
