    tequiladave-n; Welp !!

    What you are going to do is open the file in the text editor;
    THEN copy and paste the line " display-setup-script=xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --mode 1280x768 " to the bottom of the file.
    save the file in your text editor and exit back to terminal.

    NOW log out - and log back into the desk top .. rebooting though clears all memory, better to reboot in may cases.

    It is what is called
    editing a file

    But and pardon my ignorance how do I open the file in the text editor? When I run the command it asks for my password but nothing shows up.

    I haven't read all 112 posts, so I may have missed something.
    When you enter a password, there will be no echo to the screen - it's a security feature.

    tequiladave-n; Iowan; Yikes !

    Think I am the victim of 'tunnel vision" once more. I bet "gedit" is not the editor installed on the system.
    (L)ubuntu is it not ?
    Then is not 'leafpad' the default editor ?
    Then:
    Code:
    gksudo leadpad /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
    Maybe also - in my hazy memory, one had to start leafpad, right click on the file and choose "open as root" (???) .

    Let's see what is
    and what works

    Well that worked, thank you very much. Now I am trying to teach myself how to get all the computers in this house on the same network so I can abolish memory sticks to get films and files from one computer to another... I know I know it is probably really easy but since I have windows and linux computers... it is not that easy for me.

    For a mixed environment (Linux and Windows), you'll probably be using Samba.

    @tequiladave-n ; Good deal;

    samba is the subject of another thread, I do not use Windows, and have no familiarity with samba.
    Others will advise better in this context.

    @Iowan; Appreciate that you guide, guard and direct the forum and that you have my back.

    where do we go from here

    Re: Failed upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04 LTS now I can't boot

    I did use Samba and managed to link up linux and windows using a tutorial I found online but whilst I am ok opening files from my linux machine on my windows computer, I can't open the Windows files on my Linux machine, at least on VLC

    All I want to do is to open video files I might download on either of the two machines and watch it from any of the two.
