    Ubuntu 14.04 wifi Realtek RTL8723BE disconnect issues,Lenovo Yoga 2 (non pro !!)

    Hi all,
I've been struggling with my wifi connection, as some knows, the lenovo Yoga 2 has some issues with the wireless (thx for the community for helping everyone with that btw)

    My issues are as follow:
Before I couldn't connect properly to my wifi, even using the options "option rtl8723be fwlps=0 swlps=0" or just fwlps=0 in /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf

Even after a reboot, It would connect for a couple of seconds, then disconnect and never connect again sometimes even a reboot wouldn't fix anything.

Then I found this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2239932 and followed the instructions given. It has DRAMATICALLY improved everything, now I can connect and stay connected. Sometime it drops but i can reconnect.
But it's still not working properly, I have trouble browsing, chrome often says that the host is unreachable even if i'm connected. Sometimes a ping cannot resolve any host, until I deactivate the wireless connection (network manager) and reactivate it again.

What I did from the thread mentionned above :
-bind the MAC addr from my router
    - set the region code (FR)
    - set properly the config in the router but I'm not sure this step is OK, here are the option available in my router :

    I choose WPA2-PSK/AES,is it OK ?

Something else, the signal (dBm) seems to be very poor (see in the wireless script below) although I'm 2 meters away from my router. and I choose the less populated channel.

I did not tried swenc=1, and I've read that ips=0 could help ...

    I updated to Kernel Linux larry-pc 3.15.0-031500-generic #201406131105 SMP Fri Jun 13 15:06:46 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
as the driver was updated as mentionned in : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...70/comments/28

Well ....I don't know what to do next ....

EDIT : I've just read somewhere, that a guy using Arch, was upgraded to kernel 3.16 and now it work perfectly ... any thoughts ?

Re: Ubuntu 14.04 wifi Realtek RTL8723BE disconnect issues,Lenovo Yoga 2 (non pro !!)

    I choose WPA2-PSK/AES,is it OK ?
    Exactly correct.
Something else, the signal (dBm) seems to be very poor (see in the wireless script below) although I'm 2 meters away from my router. and I choose the less populated channel.
I don't see that at all:
    *Deuil_Coloc: Infra, <MAC C-01 Deuil_Coloc>, Freq 2422 MHz, Rate 54 Mb/s, Strength 98 WPA2
    As well:
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"Deuil_Coloc"
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.422 GHz Access Point: <MAC C-01 Deuil_Coloc>
    Bit Rate=72.2 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm
    Retry short limit:7 RTS thr=2347 B Fragment thr:off
    Power Management:off
    Link Quality=58/70 Signal level=-52 dBm
I don't know how signal strength ever got to be xx/70, but it is. 58 ÷ 70 = 82.8; it is a bit different from the 98 reported above but, in either case, not what I'd call very poor.

After you change to WPA2-AES, please test. Then change the /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf file to read:
    Code:
    options rtl8723be swenc=1
    Test again.

I might also try the router on channel 13.

We may try the backported drivers from 3.16 next.

Well i've added the swenc options and it didn't change a thing ...

    I've noted 2 things anyway
    first in dmesg :

It keeps roaming from BSSID, although I've binded the MAC addr of my router in the networkmanager GUI

I've read that some people had the same roaming issue over the years, and one solution was to replace networkmanager with another one, hqt do you think ?

    thx

Please see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wirele...dia_Extensions In many cases, WMM is a user-selectable option in the router. Can you please try with the option turned off in the router?

Would you please let us have a peek at the settings? If you wish, please disguise the MAC address something like attached. Change it back after you do a screenshot or write down the details, etc.

um ok, i'll check, I know I can tweak some parameters in the router.

here is the config GUI window

And i've set the ipv6 to "ignore"

I tried several tweaks present in my router, but i can't disable the WWM.
It has improved ... not sure if I did something good or if it's IT magic

Anyway, I tried without succes to replace NM with Wicd, which seems to solve many problems according to a lot of users.

I'm kinda out of option here ....

One question though ... about your advices to limit the channel to 20mhz. Doing this cancel the inner fonction of 802.11n right ?

about your advices to limit the channel to 20mhz. Doing this cancel the inner fonction of 802.11n right ?
It will still be able to connect at N speeds, although it may be a bit slower: http://www.connect802.com/80211n_channels.htm
The use of 40 MHz channels with 802.11n gives you just a little bit better than twice the throughput capacity of 20 MHz channel systems.
I originally got the suggestion here: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wirel...w-80211n-speed
If you are changing the Channel Width or mode from the default 20 MHz to the 40 MHz (or "Auto 20/40" mode in some routers) channel-bonding mode, you could be reducing, not increasing your throughput.

The Channel-bonding trick can provide a 10 to 20 Mbps throughput increase, but usually works best under strong signal conditions. As signal levels drop, using channel bonding becomes much less effective in providing a throughput boost.
I checked and my own router was set to 'Auto 20/40.' When I changed it to 20 Mhz only, I noticed no change in speeds but a big improvement in stability. I suspect that the improvement in stability is related, not to the use of 40 Mhz, but to the automatic switching between the bands. I haven't the means to prove it either way.

In short, if I can connect at a zillion Mb/s but it's unstable and drops the connection, what good is it? If I connect like this, and it's as solid as a rock, then I'm happy!

that's why it has improved since I changed to 20mhz,
but it's still not able to maintain it forever ..... meaning more than 10 min

I guess I'll give another try to Wicd ....

    thx

Is power management on or off?
    Code:
    iwconfig
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"GBR1"
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: xx:D7:19:41:54:xx
    Bit Rate=115.6 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm
    Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
    Power Management:on
    Link Quality=61/70 Signal level=-49 dBm
Does it help if you turn it off?
    Code:
    sudo iwconfig power off

    The power mgmt was already off ...;

Something I discovered today is that I am properly connected to the network, but I don't have any DNS resolv, I can ping my router but I cannot resolv URI .... I have to disconnect and connect several times before it works, and then it's very slow .... I don't get it
