Wired and Wireless not working after Clean install. [14.04.1].

Hello, this is my first post in the forums, so please don´t shoot me, if I´ve placed anything in the wrong section.

I´ve been fondling around with this for a couple of days, and I´m starting to get slightly frustrated, so figured it was time to look for some help.
I have a problem with my Acer Aspire E15 511 laptop.
I installed Xubuntu 14.04.1 on it. The wired and wireless worked in the bootable usb "Try" edition, but not in the final installation. (Though the various wireless networks do show up, just not able to connect), (The laptop has no optical drive).
I´ve tried another fresh install, installing ubuntu 14.04.1 and mint 17. Same issue persists across these distros.
Now I´m back to xubuntu 14.04.1

I´ve tried various methods of resolving, and found some fixes, messed around with firmware, deb files offline installs, the nonfree package, tried installing without updates and third party software,
etc. etc. But clearly I´m a spass at this.
(Just before posting this thread I made another clean install so the following information haven´t been messed up by my messing around).

I´ve read something about that Realtek 8168 driver being somewhat of a culprit in theses issues but I´m not a native English speaker, and I´ve had a bit of trouble understanding those threads.

Welcome to the forums Simon!

Please disconnect your Ethernet network cable, wait for a couple of minutes (or just reboot while keeping the cable unplugged) and try to connect with Wireless again.

Network Manager prefers the cable connection when it is available, and in that case, it may not attempt to connect via wireless at all. So make sure to keep the Ethernet cable unplugged while trying to connect wirelessly. It is not necessary, but it is good to remove it for now to avoid system confusion.

As for the Ethernet (wired) connection, we may need to install a tiny program 'ethtool' to fix it. That would be easy if you can connect to internet via the wireless connection, which should be fine after disconnecting the ethernet cable.

If you can't connect wirelessly even after disconnecting the ethernet cable, please follow the instructions in this post to download and run 'wireless_script' (experimental version) and post back the report it generates : http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=13024222

Hey and thanks for the welcome!

I have tried unplugging the cable and rebooting multiple times, and disabling bluetooth on boot to avoid interference. No luck there.

Ran the script, wouldn´t execute it, so just dragndropped in terminal and ran without problems.

Please try these, one at a time (may keep the previous change), try to connect, try the next if no success -

1) A driver parameter -

sudo modprobe -rv ath9k
sudo modprobe -v ath9k nohwcrypt=1

2) Try changing the encryption in the router to WPA2-PSK with AES. Make sure it is pure WPA2 and not WPA/WPA2 mixed mode, and no TKIP.

3) Try changing the Access-Point name to something less funky. I'm not sure if it may cause a problem, but it is unusually long. Perhaps try something simple like "Belkin" (without the quotes of course).

I can't. Please refer to your router's user manual for that. Usually you log into the router/AP's web interface by typing its IP address in the browser > Enter > provide the username and password for the router's admin. Then look under wireless settings for those.

PS:
No idea about the script error you mentioned. It can only happen if you run it on a read-only media (where no new files can be created), or for some reason, the script deletes the tmp file before applying the filter commands.

After doing step two and three, and booting back into the install I get a slightly different output from the script, under iwconfig, but that might just be because I ran the script while I was trying to connect to said network?

The access-point was showing channel 1 earlier, now it is showing channel 2. Is it set to "auto" mode in the router/access-point? Fix it to 1 or 11 if yes.

Try the 'nohwcrypt=1' parameter in Ubuntu again with this new setting. Or rather, make it permanent -

This will create a file "ath9k.conf" in /etc/modprobe.d directory, that will make the parameter permanent so it loads automatically since next boot.

The "IPv6" setting is still set to "Auto" in Network Manager. Please set it to "Ignore" permanently unless you are sure you need it. Delete the older wifi profile to avoid confusion.

Is the country setting in your router (if provided) also set to 'Denmark'? It is important that the router's country setting is same as the card's setting in the router. Different settings may sometimes cause problems.

And one more setting in the router, seeing the "AP bug" errors. Is your router set to b/g/n mode? Try disabling N channel if so. That is, set it to b/g only mode.

With these changes applied, reboot the router and the system both to make sure everything is properly reset, then post back a fresh wireless_script report if the connection is still unsuccessful.

Yes I live in Denmark, and it´s 4 AM over here and my eyes are getting sore.
I haven´t been able to work out the wireless, but the wired seems to be the above mentioned driver in my original post.
A fix to it needs build-essentials which I have been trying to install in offline mode, but unsuccessfully due to all the dependencies, so I´ve been spending the last 4 hours trying to customize a cd image to have it in the installation.
I will be back tomorrow and try out what you´ve written, but at the moment, I´m simply to tired and weary of this issue. Sleep tight.


Edit: Ok back for another bright day. I made a new cdimage, using the uck tool, containing build-essential and ethtool, just in the case that it wasn´t the drivers fault.
Installed the thing, compiled the driver, blacklisted the old one and placed the new one in the kernel, no success.

Then I retried all the above mentioned solutions, still no success, but now we should be up to date with this thread, and here is a wireless script:

After setting to b/g and 1 or 11 my wired connection on the desktop I´m posting from became unbearably slow. Tried changing those back and now the internet is fast again on this one.
So just a question because I´m curious, why can wireless settings affect wired performance?
