I know this is an old post, but there is a nice Extension for LibreOffice call "writer2epub" I use it all the time to publish books in epub format.

Irv, it's an old thread but still relevant! I published a few eBooks through both Amazon and Smashwords, finally figuring out how to get fairly decent formatting with .doc format. At least it's fairly decent for mobi, but I confess to not being satisfied with the epub versions. I looked in the repositories for writer2epub and found a writer2latex (interesting) also a writer2xhtml. I've read that the best way to format ebooks is with html. Anyway, I appreciate the information and will dig a little deeper into your recommendation.
