Installing and applying gtk theme in ubuntu 14.04

Hello,
I have gnome and also have gnome tweak tool. I have seen some nice gtk and icon themes on gnome-look but I am having trouble applying them. I can usually install the zip or tar file but i dont know where to put them of if I should extract them. Thanks in advance for the help.

You should have a .themes folder in your home folder.
(It's hidden so you need to enable show hidden files/folders, in the archive manager it should be right-click to enable, in the file manager ctrl + h)
Put it there, first.
That way you can test it for the local user.
If after testing you want it available for all users, copy it into the system folder
/usr/share/themes/

If you don't seem to have a .themes folder in your home folder, make one.
Just make sure to name it with a dot in front, to make it hidden.

I did that and it still is not showing up. It doesnt have anything to do with the file ending inc.gz does it? Also do i need to extract it? Thanks

Yes extract it.
Double clicking on it will open archive manager.
It should make/show a folder named after whatever the theme is, simply put in .themes folder.
