recently installed 14.04, won't connect for updates

I recently installed 14.04 on a older laptop. When updates are requested by the OS and I say go ahead, it won't connect.

Of course, it connects to the internet just fine.

    How do I fix this?

Re: recently installed 14.04, won't connect for updates

The OS usually gives an error message in situations like this. Did Ubuntu not do that? The message will often suggest a solution. Or you could run in a terminal

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
and post any error messages back here wrapped in code tags for good presentation.

Otherwise, all I can say is: "No idea."
It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

I don't know how to do "code tags"...
It seems to have worked this time. Last time I used the update app.

    To use code tags:

    1. If you are using the "Reply to Thread" button - highlight text and use the # button in the text box header. Alternatively, click the # button first, place your cursor between the code tags and type or paste your text.

    2. If using "Quick Reply" then type [code] at the beginning and [/code] at the end. The square brackets are required.

It appears to me that you are good except for that sourceforge source.

Go to the Software Center, Edit, Software Sources. In the "Other Sources" tab, find that one and uncheck it.

    You're welcome.

I guess I should add that if you remove that source, anything you installed from there will not be updated -- or, if it is a package that is in the normal repos it may be replaced with what is available from Canonical.

Re: recently installed 14.04, won't connect for updates

I am no expert but I have been using Ubuntu since version 6 and it has been my experience that new installs and some upgrades require a hardwire connection to do updates. It appears that it is necessary for the computer to recognize the network adapter and then it will find the wifi apparatus. Just a thought.

Re: recently installed 14.04, won't connect for updates

Now it's saying "Failed to download Repository Information" when I do a manual check, and suggests I check the internet connection. However, it did pop up an update, and that one worked.
