10.04 Won't respond to keyboard or mouse commands after latest updates.
Ran the latest updates to my Ubuntu 10.04 installation on both my laptop and my VM on my desktop.
Now both boot - the clock runs, I can watch it ticking. However, though I can move the mouse around, the computer does not respond to either keyboard input nor mouse clicks.
Further, the screen saver does not fire off...it just sits there. Watching me...with accusing eyes...
ANY idea how to get my files out of my file system? I've lost both machines now and am getting a wee bit frantic...

If you are using 10.04 desktop it is no longer supported. Time to save your data and do clean install of 12.04 or 14.04
You should be able to access your folders with a live USB/DVD of 14.04(not so sure about the VM)

We'll be happy to let this thread open to help you out save your files and move to a supported release.
We wont support fixing the 10.04 desktop release as it's been EOL for over a year.

The kernel upgrade to 2.6.32-61 borked the desktop. As you notice, everyone likes to tell you how 10.04 is unsupported but no one is offering help. At least Microsoft doesn't trash earlier releases of their OS and tell you too bad.Originally Posted by OrionXIII

Go here and edit your boot file using a CD-based OS so it stops on your boot screen allowing you to boot from 2.6.32-60. Then with a working system you can plan your upgrade. (Start by purging kernel 2.6.32-61)

10.04 upgrades are currently directed at the server edition and are not tested against the desktop edition. Breakages are to be expected.
