    Problems installing java

    Hi there,
New to Linux and I'm having some trouble installing java. I made a mistake and tried to delete the directory but the terminal says permission denied. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Re: Problems installing java

    Hello!

Are you trying to install OpenJDK or Oracle Java?

If the former, simply install OpenJDK from the Software Centre or by using synaptic.

(You may need to install synaptic: In the terminal, do
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install synaptic
    )

If the latter, please go to the Java wiki in my signature. Under the command line methods, find the link "Using webupd8.org's strikingly simple method" and follow the simple instructions there.

    Best wishes.

Thanks for the help, went with OpenJDK in the end. However, I did try Oracle at first and now it seems I don't have permission to delete the files. Any advice on that front?

    Re: Problems installing java

    Code:
    sudo
    in terminal or

    Code:
    gksu nautilus
for GUI to get super user power. then feel like a computer god and delete everything. seriously, carefull when deleting files. with those commandsyou can realy remove all of them.

    as for java:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java

for oracle java it's best to use the PPA (it's inthe instrucitons but in case you missed it): https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/java

What is the name of the directory? How did you attempt to create it?

I used the cd command to create the directory and rmdir to try and delete it
