14.04 LTS Wifi issue (Qualcomm Atheros AR242x/AR542x)

    Hello,

I've recently come over to 14.04 (formerly Xubuntu 13.10, now Lubuntu) on my old HP DV5 1125nr laptop, and am now having all sorts of trouble getting the wireless to work. I understand this is something of a common problem on 14.04 LTS, but I can't seem to find a method to resolve my specific driver issue.

    Code:
    sudo lshw -C network
indicates I have a Qualcomm Atheros AR242x / AR542x wifi adapter. While I am willing to acknowledge my Linux noob status, I've tried to do some Google-ing and it appears I will need to install the drivers through the terminal, but I'm not exactly sure what steps to follow to accomplish that task.

So I am asking you wise sages for assistance. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll also do my best to provide any other needed information, as requested.

    Thank you kindly.

The driver is Ok, but needs some "help". Additionally, there are no nameservers listed:

    Code:
    echo "options ath5k nohwcrypt=1" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/ath5k.conf
    sudo modprobe -rfv ath5k
    sudo modprobe -v ath5k
    echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8\nnameserver 8.8.4.4" | sudo tee -a /etc/resolv.conf
    sudo service network-manager restart

Thank you for your assistance. Unfortunately nothing seems to have changed after typing those commands into terminal. I also rebooted just to make sure.

-edit- I should note that after modprobe -v ath5k the "you are now disconnected" prompt popped up for a moment. Ditto after the network manager restart.

    Code:

    Can you scan?
    Code:
    iwlist chan
    sudo iwlist scan
Deactivate IPv6 in the wireless profile

Is this what I do to disable IPv6: http://www.ubuntuvibes.com/2011/01/q...in-ubuntu.html ? Otherwise I do not know how.

You can do it like that, otherwise in the wireless profile "IPv6 settings" to IGNORE

Only 11 channels. On whick one does the router send?

Re: 14.04 LTS Wifi issue (Qualcomm Atheros AR242x/AR542x)

The wireless settings GUI that I had in the previous version of Xubuntu doesn't exist anywhere in 14.04 as far as I can tell. I have "network" and "network connections" only. So I'm not sure how to disable IPv6 in the manner you suggested. Regardless, I disabled it and verified it is disabled using:

    Code:
    cat /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/disable_ipv6
As for my router, it's set to "auto" (Linksys WRT 120N), which I believe is 6.

I don't know if it matters in regards to your current questions, but I'm not currently connected to any internet connection (wired or wireless) on the laptop in question. I've just been typing commands you suggest and then pasting the results over my main rig.

    disabling IPv6 worked for me.

    ubuntu studio 14.04LTS
    driver: ath9k
