Question How to login as root: kubuntu 14.04

    Hi all,

Since I started with Linux years ago, I've always used the XFCE desktop (that is, xubuntu).

And, I always login and run as root. Before you start yelling at me, let me say frankly that it's MY machine, I'll run it the way I want, and if I screw something up, it's MY problem, so please don't even bother with the "you shouldn't run as root" stuff.

With that said, I downloaded Kubuntu 14.04 (64 bit), booted it from a USB stick and installed it to a test hard drive.

Of course, I can "sudo su" to run as root, but I haven't been able to find out how to have the root account show in the greeter.

Anyone know how to do this? I'm sure I could figure it out myself, but why bother if the procedure is already known?

    Thanks,

Yes, it's your system - you can do what you want. But that doesn't necessarily mean you'll get support here for everything, and certainly not for how to log into a graphical desktop as root. And, no, I'm not going to yell at you, but simply point you to our forum policy on login as root:

The practice of unlocking the the root account is not supported here. Posting instructions which could be used for malicious purposes is simply not appropriate.

By default, the Root account password is locked in Ubuntu. This means that you cannot login as Root directly or use the su command to become the Root user. However, since the Root account physically exists it is still possible to run programs with root-level privileges. This is where sudo comes in - it allows authorized users (normally "Administrative" users; for further information please refer toAddUsersHowto) to run certain programs as Root without having to know the root password.
