    Ok, now change the driver:
    Code:
    sudo modprobe -rfv r8169
    sudo modprobe -v r8168
    echo "blacklist r8169" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
    sudo depmod -a
    sudo update-initramfs -u
    Check:
    Code:
    dmesg | grep r8
    grep r8 /etc/modprobe.d/*
    ifconfig -a
    cat /etc/modules

Re: Realtek Semiconductor - ubuntu 14.04 - slow internet

Hello, I'm trying to activate the full potential of my network adapter (RTL8111G) and I followed the steps at the top of this thread. However when I rebooted there was no network connection whatsoever. When I tried to load up the appropriate driver I get:
    Code:
    $ sudo modprobe -v r8168
modprobe: FATAL: Module r8168 not found.
It didn't seem that any errors were thrown during the execution of the commands in the second post, but I could have missed something.

For now I'll work with 100Mb/s, but I would like to get up to full speed if possible.

    Thanks.

Update: I thought I might go back through the process in case something had gone wrong and I get the following error:
    Code:
    $ sudo dkms add -m r8168-dkms -v 8.038.00
Error! DKMS tree already contains: r8168-dkms-8.038.00
You cannot add the same module/version combo more than once.

Done. Before I reboot, here are the results.

    Code:
    ~$ sudo dkms autoinstall
    [sudo] password for paul:

Kernel preparation unnecessary for this kernel. Skipping...

    Building module:
    cleaning build area....
    'make' -C src/ all........
    cleaning build area....

    DKMS: build completed.

    r8168.ko:
    Running module version sanity check.

Good news! Module version 8.038.00-NAPI for r8168.ko
exactly matches what is already found in kernel 3.13.0-29-generic.
DKMS will not replace this module.
You may override by specifying --force.

    depmod....

    DKMS: install completed.

    No need to reboot:
    Code:
    sudo modprobe -rfv r8169
    sudo modprobe -v r8168
    sudo service network-manager restart

Re: Realtek Semiconductor - ubuntu 14.04 - slow internet

Okay, that worked. Thanks! The r8168 module is now loaded, however my connection speed is still reported as 100Mb/s (my switch confirms this). Any suggestions?

Any cable/switch/hardware needs to be set-up for Gigabit. Please check
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install ethtool
    sudo ethtool eth0
