    Fixing dependency hell involving VLC PPA and libebml4/libebml3

    Okay, so I just learned my lesson about PPAs and why they're bad. I'll never do it again, I swear.

    Prior to upgrading to Trusty, I added the stable PPA for VLC to get the newest version of VLC. I then upgraded to Trusty (from saucy) without removing the ppas. Yes, I know this is stupid. Oh well.

    So, here's where I'm having trouble:

    sudo apt-fast update && sudo apt-fast upgrade --force-yes -y && sudo apt-get autoremove --force-yes -y && sudo apt-get autoclean && sudo apt-get clean
    Code:
    Ign http://ubuntu.mirror.constant.com trusty InRelease
    Ign http://ubuntu.mirror.constant.com trusty-updates InRelease

    What's my next step?

    Re: Fixing dependency hell involving VLC PPA and libebml4/libebml3

    Did you edit /etc/apt/sources.list and remove those PPA's now prior to trying to go any further? gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

    Depending on what you've done gksudo may not be installed on your system - so if you get an error try just sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

    If you can get that straightened out, install a package manager - sudo apt-get install synaptic

    Always use the package manager to install packages. There is usually a reason why some version of an application may be at a lower release than that on the applications' website, and installing from the normal dependencies with apt - or a front end like synaptic - will automatically get the dependencies.

    Re: Fixing dependency hell involving VLC PPA and libebml4/libebml3

    libebml3:amd64 1.3.0-0~ppa0 did not come from the vlc ppa, it came from here - https://launchpad.net/~jacob/+archive/media

    To fix either try removing -
    sudo apt-get purge libebml3
    or find the libebml4 package in /var/cache/apt/archives or download it & force an overwrite with dpkg
    sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /path/to/libebml4_1.3.0-2_amd64.deb

    Re: Fixing dependency hell involving VLC PPA and libebml4/libebml3

    The following command fixed the problem:

    cd ~/Downloads && wget http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/poo....0-2_amd64.deb && sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /home/paperfairy/Downloads/libebml4_1.3.0-2_amd64.deb && sudo apt-get purge libebml3

    Or, for those of you reading from the future: download the aforementioned .deb file, use dpkg to overwrite the original file, then purge the old libebml3.

    Thanks everybody!
