14.04 Canon MP495 printer; Canon provide printer and scannerdrivers

Canon supply both a printer driver and a scanner driver; if I point you to both directly, and offer suggestions as to how to install?

If you go here http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/c...100301502.html you will download cnijfilter-mp495series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz and if you choose the SAVE option and your default save place should be the Downloads directory

If you are able to open a terminal; paste in commands (I suggest using the mouse and top line of the terminal.....menu at top left........go along to Edit and then down to paste ..and hit enter after paste)

    the commands would be

    cd Downloads
    tar -zxvf cnijfilter-mp495series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz
    cd cnijfilter-mp495series-3.40-1-deb
    ./install.sh
    _____________

that should get the printer going; Canon provide ScanGearMP to run the scanner; get it from here http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/c...100302802.html and it comes down as scangearmp-mp495series-1.60-1-deb.tar.gz

close the terminal; open it anew; commands are:

    cd Downloads
    tar -zxvf scangearmp-mp495series-1.60-1-deb.tar.gz
    cd scangearmp-mp495series-1.60-1-deb
    ./install.sh
to run ScanGearMP, the command from the terminal is
    scangearmp
and if you create a launcher, you can launch it each time:

I hope you don't mind me saying best to follow the commands exactly as pasted above; I hope this all goes well

    Re: 14.04 Canon MP495 printer

Thank you very much for this. I will try this later today.

In the past I have always got stuck with tar files so it is very useful to have full instruction.

The computer belongs to a neighbour who I have talked into Ubuntu but if I can't get the printer working it will be a no no.

Printers seem to me to be the stumbling block for Ubuntu, people who are still running XP also have old printers.. If only there was some simple way for a novice to work the tar driver files.

    Re: 14.04 Canon MP495 printer

Hi, I have Xubuntu 14.04. My printer&scanner is Canon MP495.
I had trouble with the printer. So, I followed the above given commands. The result is that the scanner works now fine, but still problem with the printer.
It seemed that the commands were executed OK, but the printer is not yet on the printer list.
When trying to Add new printer, Canon MP405 appears on the list, but the installation never fineshes.
There is a choise "openprintenting Gutenprint" or "local". Should I select local, since Canon's driver was installed? Neither seems to work.
I have rebooted the Xubuntu a few times, no difference.
Is there anything I could do (except buy a new printer)?

    Thanks

    Hi erkki

    1) can you COPY and PASTE this command into a terminal, and PASTE back what you get please
    dpkg -l | grep cnijfilter
    2) if you click on this link http://localhost:631/printers/ ......it should open up CUPS (printing admin): can you see a listing for your Canon

    You should see five columns

    Code:
Queue NameDescription	Location	Make and Model	Status
Look under Made and Model ...........do you see something like
    Canon MP495 series Ver.3.40
    ..........that would be a listing of the Canon driver;

    __________________________________________________ ______________________________-

can you paste this command into a terminal please
    cat /etc/printcap
and can you copy back what you get please

the mp495 works great with the gutenprint driver on Arch, so it should work fine on Ubuntu

    Re: 14.04 Canon MP495 printer

    Hi there
Now, I opened my Xubuntu after one week. There were a number of updates, and I installed all of them first.
Then I gave the commands pdc mentions above.
The item 1 gave nothing as output. The item 2, gave "no printers" on Firefox.
What I did next was: I powered the printer on. As a result small information box appeared on the upper right corner, searching printer, nothing found.
Next I went to printer settings, started "add printer" and this time the installation of gutenprint went fine! This had stopped always earlier, tried several times.

Anyhow, now the printer works fine.

Thank you very much for support.

    Best regards Erkki
