How do I show hidden files on my real desktop?

How can I show hidden files on the real desktop of Ubuntu 14.04? Right now, I can see hidden files only by browsing to my desktop's directory manually, but this is a waste of time. Is there a setting somewhere that lets me see hidden files on my actual desktop?

You can do this; but it depends on which desktop you are using:

    XFCE?
    Unity?
    PlasmaKDE?
    MATE?
    Cinnamon?
    etc...

To be honest I really don't know. I am a Linux noob. What desktop comes default with Ubuntu 14.04? If I had to guess, I'd say Unity.

    Hi sanssadness.

Open Nautilus (the file manager). Either hold the Alt key, or put the mouse over the top bar so you can get to the menus. Select:
    Code:
    Edit -> Preferences
A new windows will open> Go to the 'View' tab, and check the box 'Show hidden and backup files'.

I hope that that is what you are looking for. Let us know how it goes.
    Regards.

From the OP, I understood they wanted to see hidden files on the desktop, no in a file manager. I looked around a bit but have not found how to do this (there is a config for the Finder in OSX that allows to show .files directly on the desktop for ex).

    nautilus can manage the desktop

we need to know what desktop he's using - unity seems the obvious candidate, but as a time served s/w engineer with 35+ years experience behind me - I never assume anything in S/W !

    Thanks
Yes I know that but after looking around I did not find a quick way to do it. May be my search-fu failed me. Then looked for PCManFM that I am using, just to learn as I prefer an empty desktop. So i'll follow here.

When you are on the desktop (i.e. with no other programs in front) press Control-H to toggle hidden files.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.

Re: How do I show hidden files on my real desktop?

bapoumba is right. I'm trying to view hidden files on my real desktop, and not just with Nautilus; yes, I do know what Nautilus is.

If there's no way to do this, then there's no way to do it. I don't think your search-fu failed you bapoumba. Sometimes something just doesn't exist, and that's that.
