A few years ago I set up a Mythbuntu system for my parents (big mistake - I'm now on an indefinite technical support contract!!). It was set up on 10.04, but recently it's just generally not been working properly and became very unstable. I've been trying to talk them through how to upgrade, planning to upgrade to 12.04 and then to 14.04. They have upgraded to 12.04 but have now hit a big problem. They can't open update manager. Synaptic comes up with the following message when they run it:
Code:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
They have tried running the command in terminal and the following happens:
Code:
rosebank@rosebank-living-room:~$sudo dpkg --configure -a
Sorry, try again
Sorry, try again
Sorry try again
sudo: 3 incorrect password attempts
rosebank@rosebank-living-room:~$
The thing is they're not even getting a chance to enter a password!. They type the command, press enter, and it immediately says the password has been entered incorrectly 3 times without giving them a chance to enter it. I don't understand what's going on. This happens every time they enter a sudo command. So without being able to do sudo anything they don't have much chance to sort it out.
