Can desktop or keyboard shortcuts be created in 14.04/Unity?

I would appreciate the ability to use "Control+Alt+whatever" keyboard shortcuts to open applications and to take me directly to URLs.

After spending quite a bit of time here and in other places, I am starting to sense that the answer is "no" although nobody wants to say it.

Can somebody please either describe in detail how to do it, or say unequivocally that "no, it can't be done"

    Thank you.

I would prefer to avoid kludges, "workarounds" or downloading extraneous software, but would do that if I have to.

In Preferences you can set up Keyboard Shortcuts for just about any command including URL's (prepend with firefox or google-chrome). Understand that many simple keyboard shortcuts are already spoken for, so you have to get creative to get unused key combinations.

What happens if you hit Control-Alt-T?

    Great!

    What/where is "preferences"?

I was hoping that there was an easy answer.

Yes, calling up the terminal is no problem.

Click the gear at the upper right of the screen and select System Settings in the menu. Once System settings comes up with the grid of icons, click the Keyboard icon in the Hardware section. Then click the Shortcuts tab.

Notice that anything that's already assigned to a Compiz / Unity shortcut won't work in here - like, say, flag key + D, which spreads the windows on the current desktop. You can change those shortcuts, too, elsewhere, but it's more complicated.
I know I shouldn't use tildes for decoration, but they always make me feel at home~

    Thank you for the reply.

I had been directed there before, but had not realized that it was possible to enter Firefox as a program with a URL as an argument.

The "standard" shortcuts are OK, although I would prefer my own.

One that perplexes me is the email client. The "standard" so-called email client shortcut does not work and toggles to something like "new accelerator"

edit - Oh, I see, you can just type your shortcut on top of "disabled" and it just goes in. Totally counter-intuitive to me, but now I know.

Although having a stream of icons on the left edge in Unity is pretty and moderately handy, I much prefer keyboard shortcuts for speed and convenience.

I do appreciate your taking the time to help me.

You may have noticed that when you press and hold the Super key your first
10 shortcuts on the launcher have a numbered overlay.
You can launch any of these applications with Super + overlay number.
