Do we still have drivers for antique systems?

edit: 14.04 just worked without issues, failed to install via live disk with 0.25GB ram, may have been the disk auto mounter trolling me.i cuti t iff and upgraded the ram to 1gb
    ------------------
so i have this old dinosaur from back in 03, it was barley used just collecting dust, figured i would make a guest PC out of it
i booted xubuntu 13.04, and well the appearance looked rather crappy (graphic issues)
do we still have drivers that will run this old box?
i was going to leave xp on it and dual boot it
i have some legacy hardware that usese some windows software that i have not used in ages but if i ever wanted to...
game cube gamesaves memory card, GBA same saves and a TI84+ calculator if you are wondering.
i was hoping i can get xubuntu or lubuntu on this thing, given the ram i should put lubuntu, but i would consider xubuntu 14.04 more guest friendly after i move the panel to the bottom of the screen

The only problem I can see is the Intel 845 graphics, I know there were problems with the driver previously, but if you search the forum, you should be able to find a solution.

thanks, found a possible fix never, i was expecting much more work than slapping a simple Xorg.conf file on it, guess i will install it tomorrow and find out if it is even needed

Some additional memory would make a big difference, preferably 1 GB.

My friend had an old box with an Intel graphics card. It would run Ubuntu 8.04 perfectly but the graphics would crash with 10.04.
Put some more memory in it and even XP will run nicely.

Re: Do we still have drivers for antique systems?

i know ram would make a big difference, i am sure i have some around here somewhere i can give it, i was expecting the gpu to make it not worth bothering and getting having another side panel pop me in the mouth again, yesterday was a bad day, i hurt my self 5 times on crap
that board actually supports 2gb, 1gb would be ideal, i could get by with 512, 256 is cutting it too close imo
i have a second hdd in there so i have swap in the xp hdd and paging file on the linux hdd that makes a huge difference when swapping

Re: Do we still have drivers for antique systems?

Your hardware report indicates the computer is using PC2700 memory; I don't know if PC3200 sticks will work. They may not even fit the slots on your machine. The notch on the bottom of the memory stick may or may not line up with the little post in the memory slot.

That's why I linked to the Patriot item on Newegg. It got pretty solid reviews for a $20 part.
