    New PC spec

I think its time for a new PC and was looking for some ideas on specs. I can build it myself, don't want to spend to much cash but want a fair bit of power behind it and maybe have the option to add and upgrade as cash allows. I'm in the UK (Manchester) if anyone has recommendations for suppliers.Ta. ☺

General office and home use, back up and view digital cam, play nothing more demanding than lemmings. Budget not much to start with, but have option to add to a later date. Not very exciting I'm afraid.

I have used PCSPECIALIST - Custom PCs from whom I purchased my deaktopmachine a year ago, and http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/home.html but the second was some time ago.

Both will sell machines with no OS so you don't need to feed MS coffers if you don't want to. There are others, eg http://www.cclonline.com/ who I have never used but have heard well of from a friend; they will also sell without an OS.

This is very vague...if you throw out a dollar amount people will be able to be more helpful.

Don't overspend on video capacity. Unless you play high-end games, you don't need high-end, expensive, hot and noisy, video cards.

Don't overspend on storage unless you plan on acquiring a massive video collection.

Don't *underspend* on RAM. You don't need a huge amount but 4-8 gigs is a whole lot better than 1-2.

About £500 - £700 budget wise. Some pointers to a mainboard and CPU would be a help.

I am in the US, not similar with your hoping choices/prices
A Intel Pentium CPU (Ivy Bridge or Haswell) (if you run virtualbox you should look at a i3, or a amd apu based system)
a H77 (ivy bridge) or H87 (haswell) chipset motherboard (asus, asrock, gigabyte, msi are decent brands)
    4 or 8gb dual channel (2 sticks) ram kit (DDR3 1333 or 1600)
seasonic 300W PSU (can't find quality units at lower voltage)
Laptop: ASUS A54C-NB91 (Storage: WD3200BEKT + MKNSSDCR60GB-DX); Desktop: Custom Build - Images included; rPi Server
Putting your Networked Printer's scanner software to shame PHP Scanner Server

    Re: New PC spec

Built this about 2 months ago :
Corsair Builder Series CXM 600W Modular 80 ATX/EPS PSU
Gigabyte Z87X UD5H mobo (might have got the UD7H if it had DVI or D-sub)
Intel socket 1150 i7-4771 3.5GHZ CPU (might regret not choosing the 4770k here ?)
Crucial 16GB (2x 8GB) Ballistix Elite RAM (rated 1866MHZ but overclocked slightly to 2GHZ, probably could go a lot faster if tried)

    Already had :
128GB OCZ Vertex 4, 2.5" SSD (several of these)
Acer B226WLYMDR 22 inch LED LCD Monitor
    Logitec K800 keyboard
    Microsoft 5000 wireless mouse
One ancient but solid case on castors

No graphics or sound card as i don't game, but sure appreciate the performance opening a modest 1MB odt file in Libre Office, working with Audacity or a web browser.
This is slightly over budget at the UK prices in February (mostly Amazon) but might be within budget now.
