    Canon Pixma iX printers ?

    Hello all,
My 3rd Epson photo printer (an R1800) being in the last throes of death, I need to change it. The logical replacement would be the R3000, but the set of ink is more than double the price and the fact that they all die after a few years make me want to change brand. Also it's a model already out 2 years.

I'm curious about the Canon Pixma iX6550 and iX6850. I don't see specific drivers for them in Cups, the closest would be iX6500.

Anybody here can tell me how well they work on Ubuntu ?

Also do they accept rolls (or long sheets of papers above 1.5m long) ?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Yes, the iX6500 family is supported by gutenprint 5.2.9, and iX6800 family by 5.2.10-pre2.
I think the max paper size is set at about A3, but this can be changed in the code if necessary---if the firmware can handle it, that is.
Learning the mechanism requires good teachers and dedication

A3 or A3+ ? Apparently it doesn't handle roll printing, damn... I need it for my many panoramas...

Canon supply deb drivers for Pixma iX printers

and Canon support their own printer (for linux) with various linux drivers: for Ubuntu, they provide debian packages

    6500 series: http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/c...100329402.html

    6800 series: http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/c...100586302.html

    instructions can follow as needed

Interesting that there is official support; most likely due to the fact that many print servers run Linux.
I cannot find the information if you can print on long sheets of paper with the Canons. For instance on an Epson R1800 I can print up to 144cm. Anybody knows the max length of prints ?

PS, post amended, maximum size is 329.0 x 676.0 mm for the iX6550
