Angry RT3290 wifi chipset still has problems in 14.04

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...x/+bug/1049466 is still a problem in 14.04

I have tried numerous patches to the official drivers none of which work with 14.04. I am unable to get the drivers compiled and working.

Out of the box ubuntu insists on using rt2800pci drivers which do not work properly with this chipset.

I have tried numerous linux distributions to try and get this working and have been unable to get it functioning in any of them. It runs incredibly slowly and disconnects regularly on everything i try.

I have followed numerous guides which don't work and even tried ndiswrapper with the windows drivers which again do not work.

There appears to be quite a number of people out there with the same problem.

    Please help

Why not get a different usb wifi device that does work and very well?
RaLink 5370 off ebay for about $6.

    http://www.ebay.com/bhp/ralink-rt5370
It works plug and play and is fast.

I struggled with a mn730 legacy broadcom chip and just gave up getting it to work like it should as good speeds is apparently impossible.
    Here is mine

the fast one is the ralink 5370 miniature usb wifi wlan1.

That really isn't a solution i don't want a wifi dongle hanging off my laptop and i don't want to open it up and replace a chip.

Re: RT3290 wifi chipset still has problems in 14.04

This is a problem that seemingly had a fix released 2 years ago yet is still present in 14.04.

the rt3290 is used in a lot of laptops and a quick google search shows a lot of people have the same problem as me yet every fix i've tried from these results has failed to work for me.

buying a usb device is not a solution please stop suggesting this.

Not everyone lives in a country where it is cheap or easy to buy a wifi device, very few want a device hanging off the side of their laptops and even fewer want to open up their laptops to swap out the wifi card.

you may not have a choice except changing the wifi card.

Using the random drivers from the dropbox in that post do not compile.

Using this deb file from the russian ubuntu site http://forum.ubuntu.ru/index.php?topic=232103.0 does not work.

I've spent hours trying to get this to work.

It seems there is a debian fix for this
    https://packages.debian.org/jessie/firmware-ralink

    taken from here
    http://unix.stackexchange.com/questi...-debian-jessie

although i have no idea how to get this on my ubuntu

There is also an AUR from archlinux
    https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/rt3290sta-dkms/

again i have no idea how to get this working on ubuntu.

I tried debian but had problems with booting my laptop and i don't fancy using arch linux.

@Swanyl , you could create a feature request bug to get the firmware included in Ubuntu. Here are some feature request examples.
