No Notifications from software

I recently decided to upgrade from 11.04 to 14.04 and with it make the transition to unity.

I like it, but I am having an issue that is sort of a deal-breaker for me. I don't get any sort of notifications from programs. The big one right now is from xchat for irc. I know it does that brief wiggle of the icon, but it is very slight, so I notice it maybe 10% of the time. There is no tray icon that flashes; it doesn't even make the beep, which I have xchat set to do.
So bascailly, what can I do to get some sort of notable indicator with this and any other programs I might need to? I don't care what it is as long as I will notice it.

Does anyone maybe know how to change how long the icon wiggles in the launcher?

Have you got xchat=indicator installed? The envelope indicator icon turns blue when someone types my name in IRC.

It works automagically when it is installed, I don't have to do any configuration.

Yeah, I have it installed, but isn't working apparently.
