You mention that the computer "turns off" - that sounds unusual for all problems except overheating and power supply.
You say you've cleaned out the dust, well, I think it might be the power circuitry inside the computer that's at fault. If it's on the way out it might deliver a fluctuating level of voltage which will cause crashes. If the voltage level gets really low the computer might turn off.
Without a multimeter and opening up the computer case there's not really any way of being sure, unless you eliminate all other possibilities.
And yes, any piece of bad hardware (including graphics card) can potentially cause a crash or freeze. However, graphics cards themselves are not known to cause a computer to spontaneously shut off.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
