And I installed it with gdebi, one of the packages that I always add to my *ubuntu installations; it makes life very easy with just a double click on the .deb packages, is much smaller than the software centre, which I never use, much preferring synaptic, and sorts out dependencies for me very quickly.

I think an update has fixed the greeter! I have rebooted 3 times since the update and have been able to log on normally.

@d-cosner: don, was it today's updates?...i still have the bug but haven't run my morning's updates yet...if so, i will have to try re-booting a few times after i get today's batch...

Update: yes i believe don is right...there was an update for "unity greeter" in this morning's updates and afterwards, i re-booted several times (you could never tell from the first re-boot after updates because it always worked then but not after that) and i have no trouble typing in my password without resorting to the "trick" we were using...

So, looks like it was fixed today...everyone should check it out

Yes this should be fixed now.

unity-greeter (14.04.5-0ubuntu1) trusty; urgency=medium

Has now been working for me after updates and several reboots and start ups.
