stuck at screen that just says - Ubuntu

i downloaded ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386 and tried to run it from the disk to see if i like it ...

it asked me for the language and i selected English then the next screen had options to run from disk - i selected that and it went through some motions ... but in the end - i just have a screen that is kind of purple with Ubuntu in white in the middle and red dots under it '

i am totally new to Ubuntu so if i did not explain that correctly, please let me know.

This is what I see when I do what you did,

    1) Try Ubuntu without Installing
    2) Install Ubuntu
    3) Check disc for defects
    4) Test memory
    5) Boot from first hard disk.

Why did you choose to boot from the first hard disk? You should have chosen Try Ubuntu without Installing. Then you will be able to test Ubuntu before installing it to see if there are any problems running Ubuntu on your machine and whether you want to install Ubuntu.

An alternative is to not do anything and just let the Ubuntu live session load to the desktop.

What operating system do you have on that machine? Is it working?

    Regards.
It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

With such new hardware I would suggest 13.10 and not 12.04.

Anyway, I don't think it's the main problem here. Have you tried the nomodeset boot option?

Since you have a quad core CPU and 4 gigs of RAM try installing the 64bit (amd64) version of 12.04, not the i386 version.

When you see the menu posted in the first few post, you will see a menu at the bottom of the screen. Select boot options and select nomodeset.
