Window XP Not Showing Up on Grub After Installing 12.04 LTS

Please help me, I am an Ubuntu noob and do not know anything about this.
So I've just attempted to dual boot Window xp SP3 with Ubuntu 12.04. Before doing so, I made two partition on Window xp (one for ubuntu and one for SWAP)
After finishing, I went to the GRUB menu and could not find XP
    Here's the data:
    NAME FSTYPE SIZE MOUNTPOINT LABEL
    sda 55.9G
    ├─sda1 25.6G
    ├─sda2 1K
    ├─sda5 18.3G
    ├─sda6 ext4 9.3G /
    └─sda7 swap 2.7G [SWAP]
    sr0 1024M
My sda6 and sda7 is for Ubuntu, while my sda1 has the xp file and the sda5 is an extra drive.
I've already tried boot repair and sudo-update grub, they both don't work.
    Please help me.

Re: Window XP Not Showing Up on Grub After Installing 12.04 LTS

    Welcome.

    'sudo-update grub'

That won't work. You want 'sudo update-grub'.

    Also, post the output of:

    Code:
    sudo blkid
    Thanks.

Re: Window XP Not Showing Up on Grub After Installing 12.04 LTS

Here is what I got from sudo blkid

    Code:
    /dev/sda3: UUID="738af5a4-2d1d-4735-bce7-737b52e63c37" TYPE="ext4"
    /dev/sda4: UUID="6b44683a-ed32-48c7-9901-7e2a90f016c1" TYPE="swap"
    And here is my boot-info:
    http://paste.ubuntu.com/6997450/

    Code:

Re: Window XP Not Showing Up on Grub After Installing 12.04 LTS

Windos seems to be on /dev/sda1, but the partition is not know.
You can install and try testdisk to repair this :
    sudo apt-get install testdisk
    sudo testdisk

and then select /dev/sda, choose "Intel" "Analyse" "Quick Shearch" and display the screen

Re: Window XP Not Showing Up on Grub After Installing 12.04 LTS

I ran the testdisk on the terminal, and I got:

    Disk /dev/sda - 60 GB / 55 GiB - CHS 7296 255 63

Warning: the current number of heads per cylinder is 255
but the correct value may be 240.
You can use the Geometry menu to change this value.
    It's something to try if
    - some partitions are not found by TestDisk
    - or the partition table can not be written because partitions overlaps.

After that, I continued and did a deeper search on the Intel partition and got:

    Disk /dev/sda - 60 GB / 55 GiB - CHS 7296 255 63

    The harddisk (60 GB / 55 GiB) seems too small! (< 60 GB / 56 GiB)
Check the harddisk size: HD jumpers settings, BIOS detection...

The following partitions can't be recovered:
Partition Start End Size in sectors

Re: Window XP Not Showing Up on Grub After Installing 12.04 LTS

Some computer makers (HP in my case in 2004) had cylinders on the drive set to 240 for some reason and more recent OS's try to change cyl to 255 (and change heads to match) often without warning. I had that issue years ago when I installed 64-bit WinXP Pro beta. 64-bit Win changed my cyl from 240 to 255 even though I already had a partition for it and neither it nor 32-bit Win XP Home could boot. Fortunately I had run fdisk once (although, I did not save the output), so I did the math and was able to play with cyl and head numbers from a Linux repair CD until I got them able to boot. Then when I went to install some SuSE linux version at that time on a different existing partition, SuSE install tried to do the same thing, but I noticed the different numbers, stopped it in its tracks, and told it to use the partition as is. I still have that old computer with obsolete 64-bit WinXP beta and SuSE removed and Ubuntu 10.04 needing to be updated or replaced. But WinXP Home still works on it without ever having been reinstalled.

I have never used boot repair, so I don't know if it can automatically fix the possibly changed cylinders and heads. It did flag that yours possibly should be 240 heads instead of 255. But I cannot tell you how to proceed, just that it does sometimes happen.

Re: Window XP Not Showing Up on Grub After Installing 12.04 LTS

If the main problem is with number of heads per cylinder , then I can not help. But looking at the bootinf data, the boot sector for sda1 and sda5 is not correct for a normal Microsoft partition and it does not contain the correct (55aa) security code. That could be due to a third party program that you have installed that boot before windows and was installed in the MBR which is now over wrote by grub.

(Question to others- during linux install , does it keep a backup copy of the current MBR before it writes grub ?) If yes, we can look at it and see if it is a normal Windows MBR.

The incorrect heads per cylinder might be causing the wrong sector to be read as the sda1,5 boot sector (?).

Was Win XP on sda1 or sda5 ? what is on the other ?

Suggest rerun 'testdisk' but when you get to about the 5th menu option , select 'Advanced'.
New display should list all partitions, be sure the Win (1st partition) is hi-lighted and at bottom of display select 'Boot'. What does it say about the boot sector and backup boot sector ? Do not do anything, just select quite out of program.

Re: Window XP Not Showing Up on Grub After Installing 12.04 LTS

My computer has two drive (C and D)
Drive C, or sda1 contains the Window XP OS
Drive D, or sda5 does not contain any important data necessary of the WinXP OS. From Drive D, I made two partion for my ubuntu OS, and these became sda3 and sda4. During the installation of Ubuntu, I made extra care not to touch my WinXP partition, so I'm sure it's "still alive" but it's unaccessible. Also, in my first post I said that sda6 and sda7 had my Ubuntu, THAT IS WRONG. I recently tried to reinstall Ubuntu (not WinXP), and I changed the Ubuntu OS location to sda 3 and sda4

Here's what I got for "Advanced" in Testdisk:

    Disk /dev/sda - 60 GB / 55 GiB - CHS 7296 255 63
Partition Start End Size in sectors
    1 * HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 3343 254 63 53721297

    Boot sector
    Status: Bad

    Backup boot sector
    Status: Bad

    Sectors are not identical.

A valid NTFS Boot sector must be present in order to access
any data; even if the partition is not bootable.

Also, there is a geometry section in testdisk where I can change the cylinder and heads to the right numbers, do you think this could help?
Anyways, I just want to say thanks to you all for taking time to help a newbie like me. I really appreciate it.
    How should I proceed now?
