Networking (wifi) issue on new computer

Hi All, I asked this question on askubuntu.com a few days ago (http://askubuntu.com/questions/42092...with-12-04-lts), but got no responses so I thought I'd try here. I built a new computer recently, and while almost everything works, networking does not. I cannot get a wired, or wireless connection - though interestingly I can connect by plugging in my iPhone.

I moved house yesterday and no longer have wired access - so I am putting that on hold for now. This post is about the wifi.

My wifi card is: TP-link WDN4800

    running dmesg gives:

    Code:

repeated several times. I have looked around trying different solutions, but none have currently worked. Needless to say it is annoying having to leave my phone plugged in to get internet access on this machine. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

    Thanks in advance.

I probably should have mentioned before, that I see the wireless networks and am even prompted for my password (repeatedly at ~5 minute intervals) but I never get a connection. eth0 below is my iPhone.

    Try opening /etc/network/interfaces with:
    Code:
    sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
    and change this:

    Code:
    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback
    iface eth0 inet dhcp
    ... to this:

    Code:
    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback
    iface wlan0 inet dhcp
Reboot. It may or may not work, but a quick shot in the dark. If it doesn't, change it back.

Thanks for trying, but it had no affect.

Re: Networking (wifi) issue on new computer

    In the /etc/network/interfaces file
    Code:
    iface eth0 inet dhcp
needs to be removed, the file should only have:
    Code:
    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback
    then reboot.

Also run these commands one at a time:
    Code:
    echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
    sudo modprobe -rfv ath9k
    sudo modprobe -v ath9k
In your router change the encryption to just wpa2 AES CCSM if you have that option.
    Thanks

While your computer was off did you unplug your iphone? you can not use wifi and iphone at the same time.

Shutdown then unplug iphone, boot up, if it does not connect post a new wireless file?

    Are you in Australia?
    Thanks

Well, that is very odd, because I thought you were one of my country people. Your wireless output shows this:

    Code:
    country AU:
    	(2402 - 2482 @ 40), (N/A, 20)
    	(5170 - 5250 @ 40), (3, 23)
    	(5250 - 5330 @ 40), (3, 23), DFS
    	(5735 - 5835 @ 40), (3, 30)
According to your system, at least wifi, you're in Aus. That is why Wild Man assumed as much ...
